Glute Activation and Repositioning Drills: How to Choose the Right Position

exercise selection glute activation glute clenchers glute exercises hip extension hip stability single leg hinge Oct 17, 2026

Here is a simplified breakdown of why I might use one glute position over another. There will always be outliers, but I hope this helps with your own decision making. It can also help with exercise selection for accessory work.

An example: the glute clencher

If someone is a glute clencher, I might not give them kettlebell swings to start. Instead, I might work on a single leg hinge without extending fully through the hips.

A dynamic example

A Bosch clean variation requires full hip extension, versus a skater, which doesn't. Choosing between them comes down to what the person needs right now.
