Upper Cervical Flexion: Why the Small Nod at the Top of Your Neck Matters

Upper cervical flexion is a subtle yet essential component of healthy spinal mechanics. It's not just posture. It's motion at the top that drives performance everywhere else.

Where it happens

This movement occurs primarily between the occiput (the base of the skull) and the atlas (C1), a joint designed for precision and balance rather than large ranges of motion.

What happens when you control it

When you can control this small nodding motion, the occiput glides posteriorly over the atlas, aligning the skull directly over the cervical spine. That alignment allows optimal activation of the deep neck flexors (longus capitis and longus colli) while reducing overuse of superficial muscles like the SCM and upper traps.

Why it matters beyond the neck

Restoring upper cervical flexion improves how the visual and vestibular systems orient the body in space, enhances balance and breathing efficiency, and reduces compensations throughout the kinetic chain. When the top of the system is organized, everything below it, from shoulder mechanics to gait, moves more efficiently.
